Mask of Empress Eugenie of France surrounded with flowers and made with real hair (1867) – Edouard Welling
Vilhelm Bjerke-Petyersen 1943 Life Cycle [1943]
This painting was painted in 1943, an important period in the artist’s life, World War 2 is just over, and he and his wife Elsa are about to move to Sweden. The interaction between man and the woman is subtly expressed and the sea is a lonely figure, he stands at the far shore, on the way forward. Out at sea, a ship with red sails, perhaps the Flying Dutchman as the symbol of the endless journey on uncharted waters. Life Cycle is a monumental work of art, which many regarded as one of Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen’s most significant works from the 1940s.
